Math Tips
The second graders have been hard at math. We have completed our units on telling time and counting money. They have finished the unit on graphing. Please continue to ask your child what time it is or how much longer till a certain thing happens. When going to the store, have them give the money. These small practices will make a big difference in these skills. Any additional help will only make them stronger mathematicians.
We have started our unit on regrouping with addition. This is where knowing those math facts will pay off. Please continue quizzing them on them. Our lessons have been going well, so encourage them to continue work with care.
Thanks for all your help!

Curriculum
RELIGION
In second grade we will be preparing for and receiving two sacraments; Reconciliation and Holy Eucharist. Some of the special events in second grade are The First Christmas Play, the Last Supper Prayer Service, liturgies celebrating our fathers (Donuts with Dad) and mothers (Muffins with Mom) and service projects within our community. They will prepare for Reconciliation by studying the Commandments and Bible stories with forgiveness as the central theme. We will be preparing for First Eucharist by learning parts of the Mass.

SPELLING
In spelling there are 36 weekly lessons based on different phonetic skills. At the end of each lesson there is a spelling test on those words.
READING
Our reading series (Scott Foresman) highlights stories with different literature skills-summarization, main idea, story setting, plot, characterization, and drawing conclusions (just to name a few). The stories are written in different genres--folk tales, fables, realistic fiction, fiction, non-fiction and fairy tales. We put on several plays throughout the year including Stone Soup, and Planet of the Grown-Ups. We focus on different authors and illustrators; such as
Arnold Lobel, Jan Brett, Cynthia Rylant, Marc Brown, JoAnna Cole and Laura Ingalls Wilder. One of the major goals in my class is to have your child become a better reader and to LOVE reading.
LANGUAGE ARTS
In language arts we study parts of speech, sentence structure and grammatical punctuation. They students in Young Authors write stories and poems on various themes. They learn proofreading techniques. Many of their stories are type written and will be made into a Young Author booklets at the end of the year. Our goal is to feel successful writing and journaling.
SCIENCE
In science our first unit is about the interaction of living things. At the end of this unit the second graders put on a "Habitat Play"; which is presented to all interested people. We will also study changes over time. Dinosaurs and space are part of the themes of this unit. During this unit we also visit the Barlow Planetarium and Weiss Museum. Studying basic health and germs are also part of our studies. Curiosity and observation are all welcome during the year!
MATHEMATICS
Second grade mathematics continues with basic math operations of addition and subtraction. Students will learn their basic math facts so that when we learn regrouping operations in addition and subtraction the learning will be easier. Besides learning regrouping concepts we will be working on place value, money counting and telling time. We will be also learning about mulitiplication and division operations by the end of the year.
SOCIAL STUDIES
In Social Studies we will be learning about communities and types of communities. We will be learning about living in the past and present. We will be studying about laws, rules, and government. Cultural celebrations will be part of our studies. Our country and its landforms, states and capitals will all be part of our year's learning. We will be visiting some historic sight during the year--in the past we have gone to Hearthstone and/or the Grignon Home. The year's work has many projects and fun learning activities.
